China's Pork Import Down in Jan-Oct 2014 (Summary)

According to China customs statistics, in January-October, China imported a total of 464,000 tons of pork, down by 3.4% over last year (YOY); worth CNY 5.22 billion, down 7.5% YOY; average import price at 11.2 yuan/kg, down 4.3% YOY. There in October, the import reached 41,000 tons, down 18.3% YOY; worth 450 million yuan, down 23.9% YOY; average import price at 11 yuan/kg, down 6.8% YOY.

Main Causes of Pork Import Decrease:

(1) Domestic pork supply increased, cutting down the import demand.

(2) China banned pork imports from some countries.

Considerable Problems:

(1) In China, the stocks of sows and live pigs are declining;

(2) Russia has resumed pork imports from China, beneficial to Chinese pork industry.
